Bearings can be used for a large number of applications. Ball bearings work through their design: the ball has a smooth metal surface so that rolling causes minimal friction. Online Bearings stock a wide range of high quality, versatile bearings.

Bearing Maintenance

Taking care of your bearings properly is important for enhancing performance and increasing the lifespan. Correct maintenance and handling will have a big impact on the performance of the bearing - minimizing downtime, longer life and higher productivity, which in turn will save you money.

Bearings should always be handled with care and stored in a clean and dry environment. Taking great care not to expose the bearings to dust and dirt as these can lead to bearing failure. Never apply direct force on a bearing as this can cause the elements to be misaligned and damaged and this can lead to poor performance and bearing failure.

You should inspect your bearing prior to mounting checking the housing and shaft for any damage, using a soft cloth wipe the surfaces clean.

The correct method for mounting bearings depends on the type of bearing and fit. Tapered bore bearings can be mounted directly on cylindrical shafts or tapered with the help of tapered sleeves. Cylindrical bore bearings will normally be mounted by the press fit or shrink fit method. Pressure should only be applied with a press fit, if it is not press fit damage will be caused.

Ideally bearings should be heated with induction heaters and never an open flame. The maximum temperature permitted depends on the heat treatment of the material. If the temperature is over the heat limit it can cause damage to the bearing steel and lead to failure.

The use of the appropriate equipment when handling and fitting your bearings is essential. There are specialized tools available for mounting and dismounting your bearings these include bearing fitting tool kits, oil injector kits, bearing pullers, induction heaters and hydraulic nuts. These tools will ensure a smooth process and minimize any risk of unwanted damage and unnecessary repair cost.

Whilst ball bearings are perhaps the most common type of bearing, there are many other types which Online Bearings stock, including housed and flanged, inserts, rod end and self aligning. If a product has moving parts, it is likely that a bearing has been used in its construction. Take a look at the cost-effective ball bearings that we stock here.
