Summary: See Online Bearings' step by step guide to servicing cartridge bearings as well as cup and cone bearing hubs for your mountain bike!

Your mountain bike is your pride and joy as it carries you from one adventure to the next. Whilst it does a good job of withstanding the elements, it is still important to make sure that you take care of your bike from the frame to the bearings, ensuring longevity and keeping it running at peak performance. Having well lubricated, clean and properly adjusted bike bearings makes for a smoother ride, so make sure you’re getting the most out of your bike with Online Bearings.

Cartridge Bearings Maintenance

Cartridge bearings are an integral part of a bike and can be found on nearly every component. In order to properly service the cartridges, first remove the seal with a scalpel tool and then clean and dry the cartridge bearing. Once it has been thoroughly cleaned, add the grease generously to ensure the surfaces are shielded from each other. After this step you can then refit the seal and pop it back into place! Why not take a look at our bike maintenance kits and equipment to help service your bearings?

Cup and cone bearing hubs

Start the process of maintaining your cup and cone hubs by using a thin cone spanner to undo the axels of your bike and gain access to the bearings. Ensure your hands are extra steady so that no bearings are dislodged as you do this. Usually there are ten balls on either side of the hub, so take care in removing them. Online Bearings suggest you keep them in a small container to avoid losing the balls. Spray them with degreaser and rub them with a rag, making sure they are all uniform. If any need replacing, Online Bearings stock stainless steel balls ready for next day delivery.

Next, give the hub bearing seat a good clean with some degreaser ready to add in some fresh grease for the bearings to sit in. Finally, tighten the cone and lock washer. The latter can be tricky as it is recommended the bearing should turn smoothly with no audible resistance, which could harm the bearings.
